Neighbors taking action against short-term rental properties

LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas is a top destination spot, especially during EDC weekend.

Some neighbors are upset about people trying to turn their neighborhood into a motel with short term rentals.

Now the City of Las Vegas could soon change the way homeowners that sign up with companies like Airbnb would have to operate.

A bill would require the owners of the home to apply for a special use permit, giving neighbors a chance to voice their opinion on whether the permit should be granted or not.

"Right now one of these motels can show up right next door to you without any input from you as a neighbor," said Stephen Grogan, Las Vegas resident.

Grogan has lived in the central part of Las Vegas for about 20 years.

These days, he says it's hard to know who the neighbors are because many are being operated as short-term rentals through websites like Airbnb.

"Our frustration is that the city has yet to work out a system to quickly react when there is an illegal operation happening. It requires us citizens to go out and confront people,” Grogan said.

Las Vegas City Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian is proposing that short-term rental homeowners must apply for a special use permit.

"What it does is it notifies the people in the community that there will be special use of this place and they then can come and make their thoughts to the people who represent them," Tarkanian said.

For neighbors like John Saling, he says he's sick and tired of the free for all.

He says the homes are often packed with dozens of people for the weekend, leaving him to clean up the mess.

"We found liquor bottles, we found condoms, panties, not all the time but we found it, and we have a constant traffic flow here," Saling said.

Grogan says he's going to keep pushing to preserve his neighborhood as a residential area.

Anyone who wants to voice their opinion about the issue will be able to do so Monday at 10:00 a.m. at City Hall. A big crowd is expected.
