Nevada National Guard Could Be Deployed to US-Mexican Border

The president's proposal could have an effect on Nevada, and currently there are about 3,500 Guardsmen in the Nevada National Guard. Some are now deployed over seas.

Officials with the National Guard say no matter how many National Guardsmen could possibly go to the U.S.-Mexican border there would be enough of them left here in Nevada for any state emergencies we may have.

They say there's almost an unspoken word between the president and state governors. That not more than half of a state's available National Guardsmen will ever be deployed from one state at one time.

Out of the 3,500 men and women in the Nevada National Guard, only 150 of them are deployed out of state right now. Fifty are in Southwest Asia and 100 of them in Iraq. Over the last two and a half years, Nevada's National Guard has been deployed all over the world, except for Australia.

They've also deployed all across the nation and most recently in the Gulf Coast states after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. They've also assisted in state emergencies such as the flooding in Northern Nevada a year ago, and extra security at McCarran and Reno-Tahoe Airports after the terrorist attacks of 9-11.

Officials with the Guard say it's possible their guardsmen won't be needed on the U.S.-Mexican border if President Bush decides to deploy thousands from the National Guard. They say California and Texas have the largest National Guard units in the country. Those units may be able to cover the number of troops Bush is proposing to send.
