Nevada National Guard members return from Middle East

LAS VEGAS - Two Nevada Army Guard units are back home after serving nearly a year overseas in the Middle East and family and loved ones are overjoyed with their safe return.

Around 250 Nevada Army Guard soldiers in the 17th Sustainment Brigade and the 137th Military Police detachment returned home after being in Kuwait and Afghanistan.

Among them were a father and son deployed together and working with the rest of the unit to keep the mission at hand a success.

There's no place like home for Sergeant James Richardson Junior.

"Sometimes I'd worry about him if he was in another country or more dangerous country and he'd worry about me the same," Sgt. James Richardson Jr. said.

He is one of the guardsmen deployed overseas for the past year. His father was in the same unit.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to be deployed with your son," said Command Sgt. Major James Richardson, 17th Sustainment Brigade.

Their unit had mission command for more than 2,000 soldiers spread across eight countries and handled for operational logisitics.

"Everything from food, water clothing, ammunition, vehicles are brigade and subordinate units were responsible for moving all of that around the battle field," said Commander Vernon Scarbrough, 17th Sustainment Brigade.

Governor Brian Sandoval helped welcome back the guardsmen in a ceremony Friday.

"You see them out there in Afghanistan in Kuwait being away from friends and family and performing their missions," Governor Sandoval said. "First and foremost it makes you proud."

As for loved ones, Shade Evans, Richardson Junior's girlfriend, she couldn't wait to wrap her arms around him once again.

"The feeling was overwhelming," she said. "All I could do was instantly scream."

Soldiers say it always takes time to re-adjust returning back home but they're grateful to be back on US soil. Many of them are also ready to return to their regular jobs in Nevada.
