Nevada Unemployment Rate Falls

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- The Las Vegas metropolitan area lost 7,600 jobs in September compared to August but still had 15,300 more jobs than in September 2012, according to seasonally adjusted data released Monday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Those numbers were included in a report showing that Nevada's unemployment rate fell from 9.5 percent in August to 9.3 percent in September, the lowest jobless rate since December 2008.

"I am pleased to see the improvement Nevada's labor market is making, with September's unemployment rate hitting the lowest point in five years," Governor Brian Sandoval said. "We have made great strides in our economic development efforts, but recognize the need to continue the momentum so that all of Nevada's unemployed have the opportunity to return to work."

Due to the federal government shutdown the Las Vegas unemployment rate for September won't be released by the state until Friday.

But a closer look at estimated Las Vegas employment numbers that weren't seasonally adjusted reveals that the metro area gained 500 jobs from 843,800 in August to 844,300 in September. These included gains of 600 jobs in goods producing sectors and a loss of 100 jobs in service industries.

More upbeat news can be found comparing September to the same month a year ago, when there were 828,000 jobs. Year over year, Las Vegas added 7,000 leisure and hospitality jobs, 4,100 trade, transportation and utilities jobs, 3,700 government jobs and 3,200 education and health services jobs. But there were declines in construction (down 1,400 jobs), information services (down 500) and financial activities (down 300).

A key difference from unadjusted job numbers is that seasonally adjusted numbers factor in differences in hiring patterns depending on the time of year.
