New Courtrooms to Ease Judges' Caseload

LAS VEGAS -- The Regional Justice Center is opening eight new courtrooms to help judges in the Eighth Judicial District tackle a caseload of about 1,000 a year.

Judges said the new courtrooms are going to make a big difference.

Chief Judge Jennifer Togliatti said that for years, judges in the Eighth Judicial District had to share courtrooms.

"It's a really big deal," she said of the new courtrooms.

With the new courtrooms, judges can take the whole day to chip away at their caseloads.

"The more time that judges can be in a courtroom with a jury, trying a case, the quicker these cases will get done," Togliatti said.

The new courtrooms are located where they used to manage thousands of files.

To make space for the courtrooms, thousands of pages of documents were scanned each day. So far, about 30 million documents have been scanned, clearing the way for the courtrooms.

Judge Art Ritchie, of the Eighth Judicial Court, said the renovation was done on time, on budget and with no cost to taxpayers.

"It didn't cost any money to build these courtrooms from general fund dollars," he said. "It was part of an initiative that created a funding source, we had a location, and it took about three to four years to develop this plan."

The courtrooms will alleviate some of the pressure on the busiest court in Nevada and judges said it will be a much faster experience for the hundreds going through their specialty courts.

"These courts require people to come week after week and check in with a judge and now they can get in and get out," Togliatti said.
