LAS VEGAS -- Hundreds of construction workers are on the job and hundreds more permanent retail positions will be created because of a new shopping center being built near Summerlin.
Bulldozers are moving on the new 200,000-square-foot Sahara Center at Sahara Avenue and Hualapai Way.
The project is a boost to the construction industry, and the concrete will start pouring Thursday.
Once it is built, stores like HomeGoods, Stein Mart, and Sprouts Farmers Market will be looking to hire hundreds of people.
The new shopping center is in the middle of an area that already has plenty of places to shop. Sahara Center will be just blocks away from Tivoli Village, Boca Park and many smaller boutiques.
"Summerlin definitely has some of the best retailers in Las Vegas. What we lack here is the mid-price and kind of the value-oriented retail. Sahara Center is going to fill that demand," Ted Baker, the leasing consultant for the property, said.
Baker expects nearly every space in the shopping center to be full on opening day. A sign of the high demand for affordable shopping in the area.
"Everybody likes to save money," Summerlin resident Daniella Kosbob said. "I like the handbags, the jewelry, my house is full of the stuff for years."
"This is a big family community over here just like it is in Henderson, and family communities aren't going to go to high-end stores to buy their 2-year-old something that they're going to grow out of," said Alycia Gumerson, who works in the area.
Hundreds of employees will work in the stores once they're built, before then nearly 200 construction workers will be on the job.
"We have electricians and plumbers, mechanical contractors, drywall plaster subcontractors, refrigeration subcontractors," Mark Henderson with Level CM said.
For Ted Baker, the 220,000 square feet of dirt represents more than a future place to find great deals.
"It represents a change in the economy. For the first time in many years, we have banks lending money and we've got developers going vertical with retail," Baker said.
He says it is a good deal for Las Vegas. The shopping center is set to open Oct. 2014, just in time for the next holiday shopping season.
