New show 'Hunted' focuses on people trying to disappear

LAS VEGAS - Winning $250,000 by evading capture for 28 days might sound easy, but is it?

That's the premise behind a new reality show that is airing on CBS called "Hunted." Nine couples go on the run and are hunted by a team of experts.

What's realistic? What's not? What does it takes to elude capture, if you're ever hunted?

While it's possible to disappear from society, it's not so easy to stay on the run for any length of time.

One couple trying to win a quarter million dollars by staying out 28 days didn't even make it through the first episode of hunted.

Their mistake was using an ATM.

In today's world, we leave a trail of electronic bread crumbs everywhere we go.

Cell phones, cars and computers emit signals.  And anyone with the right equipment can pinpoint your exact location.

In "Hunted," a team of former law enforcement professionals work to find people.

"Some of the experts from Homeland Security, CIA, FBI, FBI analysts, I mean they have some great people that are on their cast," said Bobby "G" Gronauer.

Former Las Vegas Metro cop and current private investigation firm owner Bobby "G" Gronauer watches "Hunted," and says the methods they use to track people are realistic.

What isn't realistic? Is the sheer numbers working in the command center, and their ability to easily get search warrants.

"As a civilian, you're not going to get a warrant and they're all retired," he said.

The show illustrates how difficult it is for average Americans to completely remove themselves from society for any length of time.

One couple tried to hide in the woods, but a cut foot forced them out. They were eventually captured at a friend's house.

"These are regular people, they fall apart easily," Gronauer said.

Another couple hightailed it out of town and relocated hundreds of miles away, but all investigators had to do was figure out who their friends were, play a game of connect the dots, and it was game over for them.

So how do you disappear from society in today's interconnected world?

Experts say:

  • Destroy your phone and don't drive your car.
  • Delete all social media accounts.
  • Avoid contact with friends and family.
  • Change your appearance.
  • Stay off the Internet.
  • Hunker down.

But as the show "Hunted" is showing us, it's harder than it sounds even when $250,000 is at stake.
