LAS VEGAS - North Las Vegas Police Detective Chad Parque was laid to rest Tuesday after losing his life earlier this month in a car crash while on duty.
A police motorcade carried the officer's body in a flag-draped coffin in the back of a NLV Police truck from Palm Mortuary to Central Christian Church in Henderson where his funeral service was held at noon and then back to Palm Mortuary for a graveside service.
Hundreds filled the church to celebrate his life and remember his legacy as a detective, husband, father and friend.
Parque died on Jan. 7 after a wrong-way driver crashed into his car.
He leaves behind a wife and young child.
During the funeral service, fellow officers talked of Parque's dedication to serving the community. He started his career at the age of 15 when he joined the Metro Explorer program. His then supervisor remembers a young teen with plenty of ambition.
Many praised him for his work ethic and protecting the community he called home. Parque quickly moved up the ranks. He was promoted to detective last July.
"Chad always tried his best to make his impact. If he felt a young person was at a cross roads, he would give them the talk before walking them to jail. He would even tell them who to call and what to do when they got out," said NLV Police Chief Alexander Perez. "Chad understood that arresting someone could mean a break in a cycle of bad choices. One man who was on a destructive path recently posted a note on social media after finding out about Chad's accident and it read, 'I was so mad at you for coming to court on me and getting that judge to give me that nine months, you saved my life in 2011 and I will never forget.'"
Perez said, Parque's life was filled with purpose.
Fellow officers said the only thing Parque loved more than being a police officer was his family. The 32-year-old married his high school sweetheart in 2009 and soon after they welcomed a baby girl.
