NV Energy Receives Smart Grid Grant

NV Energy has been awarded a $138 million federal grant to build a "smart grid" infrastructure in Nevada.

The grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was announced Tuesday by U.S. Sen. Harry Reid.

NV Energy, the holding firm of Nevada's two main electric utilities, applied for the grant in August. It will match the federal money with $160 million.

Officials say the new technology will make electricity and natural gas delivery more efficient.

Besides infrastructure improvements, officials say more than 1 million utility meters will be replaced. The new meters will allow customers to see how much their energy use is costing at different times of the time and encourage conservation.
