Oct. 1 memorial crosses moved to Clark County Museum

LAS VEGAS - The 58 memorial crosses which lined the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign have moved to the Clark County Museum.

Before crews moved them to their new, permanent home, officials held a ceremony honoring the man who created the crosses for those who lost their lives.

"She'll never be forgotten," said Edward Avila as she watched the memorial cross for her niece get packed up and ready to move.

Denise Cohen and her boyfriend Derrick "Bo" Taylor were two of the 58 people killed during the 1 October tragedy.

"It means a lot to us. It's good to see people out there that have hearts, that care about this tragic situation," Avila said.

The carpenter who created the crosses, Greg Zanis, traveled all the way from Chicago to bring his creations to Las Vegas.

"When I get to meet the families, this is my reward. I get to hug them," Zanis said.

Avila said the monumental amount of support, love, and kindness that's been shown to their family would make Denise very happy.

"She would go, 'Oh my god, man, I didn’t even know half these people and look what they're doing for me. I love it.' That's what she would say," Avila explained.

The small items of tribute and respect surrounding the crosses will be processed, preserved, and become part of the permanent collection as well.

"All the little trinkets and stuff that I see on her cross from people that didn't even know her but feel for what happened is amazing," Avila said.

Clark County officials didn’t give a specific date as to when the memorial cross exhibit would open.
