LAS VEGAS -- The officer involved in the shooting of a robbery suspect has been identified as Officer Daniel Garmendia by Metro Police.
Police said 39-year-old Garmendia has been placed on routine paid administrative leave while the Jan 6 shooting is investigated. Police say the officer opened fire after attempting to arrest the suspect near Bonanza Road and Maryland Parkway. Police said Garmendia was one of the officers investigating a suspicious vehicle when one of the suspects was recognized from an earlier robbery.
The male suspect and a woman fled in the car to the area of N. 12th Street where they fled on foot. Police say the male suspect fired several shots and the officer returned fire. The suspect is listed in critical condition. The woman was arrested.
Garmendia has been with Metro since 2009.
