One Dead in Officer-Involved Shooting Near Red Rock

LAS VEGAS -- The man shot and killed during an officer-involve shooting near the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Friday, has been identified.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, the incident started at around 11:45 a.m. when dispatchers received calls about a pedestrian, who was walking along St. Route 159, attacking two bicyclists.

One trooper and two Bureau of Land Management rangers found the suspect, 20-year old D'andre Berghardt Jr.

NHP he would not cooperate with their commands, and the officers got involved in a physical fight with the man. The confrontation escalated and at least one of the officers shot Berghardt. It is not known how many times he was hit. No officers were hurt.

It is not known, at this time, whether the suspect was armed, Trooper Loy Hixson told 8 News NOW.

State Route 159 is closed between the Red Rock Visitor Center and Sky Vista Drive.
