Parents Look for Justice in a Difficult System

LAS VEGAS -- When the grief is just more than he can bare, Frank Peterson says he tries to find some comfort in his daughter Angela's bedroom. Here lies her favorite stuffed animals, movie posters and clothing just as she left them on the night she was killed.

"This was her room. It is as she was before all this happened," said Frank Peterson.

The 24-year-old was a UNLV student living at home. She was returning from a friends house last November when her car was broadsided by 18-year-old Kevin Miranda's truck in the intersection of Rainbow and Flamingo.

Police say Miranda's preliminary breath test at the crash scene was .14, nearly twice the legal limit. The Peterson's say it only hurt more when Miranda's bail was initially set at just $20,000.

Miranda would await trial on house arrest, with assurances from the prosecutor that any violations would result in the immediate revocation of his bail.

The Peterson's learned days ago that Miranda was arrested for smoking marijuana, but for reasons they still don't understand, they say his bail was not revoked, just raised to $50,000.

"It's a tragedy for my clients, regardless. But at some point, they have to feel like the system is working for them and right now, it's not," said attorney Marc Cook.

Frustrated, but not without faith, the Peterson's say they will never stop fighting for justice for their beautiful daughter. They say they've lost too much already.

"We're not going to have any grandchildren ever," said Frank Peterson.
