Pedestrian deaths in county getting worse, traffic safety advocates roll out new campaign

LAS VEGAS - The worst year yet! That's what officials are saying about 2017 when it comes to pedestrian-related deaths.

Road safety advocates say despite a public campaign to cut down on pedestrian deaths in Clark County numbers are getting worse, not better.

For Sherri Bush, time stood still on February 17, 2013.

"I opened the door, and I could see all the lights," Bush said.

Bush's 25-year-old son Jimmy Spagnoli died after he was hit by a car while jaywalking across Flamingo Road.

"We were just.. He was my everything," Bush said about her son.

Showing 8 News NOW a watch her son was wearing when he was hit and killed, Bush said, "It's been four years, and it's still working."

Four years is almost as long as Advocates for Pedestrian Safety have been trying to turn the tide on the steady stream of deaths.

On Wednesday, the ePEDemic campaign revealed a display at the Boulevard Mall.  The shoes in the display represent those lost including Bush's son.

We're only halfway through the 2017 year, and 35 pedestrians have already died in southern Nevada making the area on pace for its deadliest year ever.

"It says 'we're missing our most vulnerable population' is what it says," said Erin Breen, UNLV.

Traffic safety advocate Breen believes the deadly traffic trend is a public health issue.  Several major projects are being prepared all over the valley, but for Breen, even policies can't change the mentality.

"We're all in too big a hurry," Breen said. "It doesn't matter what mode of travel, we're not doing something right."

Bush has taken up the fight as well.

"It's everybody.  It's not just a pedestrian.  It's not just a driver.  It's not one solution, it's everyone working together," Bush said.

According to Bush, her son would be proud of the way she has taken action.

"I think he's thinking of me and telling me to be positive and don't be sad," said Bush. "I don't want anyone to feel the heartache that I do daily.  I'm that passionate about it.  Something has to be done."
