Piranha carcass found in pond at Veterans Memorial Park

LAS VEGAS - A piranha in the park?  One local man says he spotted the carcass of the flesh eating fish common in south America right here in southern Nevada.

According to Stephen Syme, the fish was found in the pond at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. Syme said he found one fish in the water and the carcass of another along the shore.

"It struck me because I was like, 'that looks like a piranha'," Syme said.

People fishing in the area said trout and catfish are common in the pond, but they said they have never seen a piranha.

The Department of Wildlife said they were alerted after a picture popped up in a neighborhood Facebook group.

It's all pretty shocking for siblings Paul and Janet who were fishing just a few days later.

"They're very vicious," said Paul Field.  "They'll eat everything!  Oh, yea and teeth like you won't believe, but they'll take your fingers off won't they?"

"Only on TV shows, but nothing like that here," Janet Cooper said. "I wouldnt have thought; just little old trout.  I saw a few catfish, but piranhas are a different thing altogether."

The Department of Wildlife has seen the picture and agreed the fish does appear to be a piranha.  Owning a piranha is illegal and so is dumping them.

The misdemeanor can run you a $500 fine and up to six months in jail for each count.
