Police Warn Against Unsafe Sleeping Habits

LAS VEGAS -- As an exhausted new mom, it's easy to place your newborn in your bed at night, but it's also dangerous.

Metro Police warn at least 100 infants have accidentally died in Clark County in the past five years because of unsafe sleeping habits. Metro Police are now using a new Public Service Announcement to help prevent another tragedy.

Ten days ago Regina and Justin Arnold's life changed forever when their little girl arrived.

"She's our little angel, Bailey Ray," Regina said.

Parenthood forms an unbreakable bond. In some cases, it can lead to well-meaning parents pulling their babies into their bed. It may be the result of exhaustion, an upset baby, or just wanting to be close to their little one, but police say it's a dangerous move. They want parents to remember the ABC's of safe sleeping.

"The safest way for a baby to sleep is alone, on their back, in a crib," said Metro Police Officer Laura Melzter. "When we say alone, we mean by themselves with no other adults, with no other babies, with no other siblings, with no stuffed animals, with no pets."

As the Arnold's navigate their way through parenthood, they are taking the safety message seriously.

"We try to put her in the bassinet, we try to put her in the Pack 'n Play, and then if she cannot go to sleep, we'll try and hold her for a little bit," Regina said.

Over the past five years, at least 20 infants have died every year in Clark County due to unsafe sleeping habits. Co-sleeping has become the number 1 cause of preventable deaths for babies.
