Las Vegas valley pollen counts extremely high

LAS VEGAS - Rain and warmer temperatures this winter have led to an early bloom and a massively high pollen count.

UNLV monitors the pollen count throughout the year for Clark County.

According to the pollen program supervisor, the bloom started in January. Normally it begins in early March.

UNLV took over the program three years ago, but pollen count records date back to the 1980s. The previous record was 10,000 grains per cubic meter. This week, they've seen pollen counts that are 15,000 grains per cubic meter, or 50 percent more than the previous record high.

"Of course Mulberry and European Olive, which are the two notorious ones that we have a problem with here in Las Vegas. They're already banned, but what we want to be aware of is not to plant some of these other things, like pine trees and ash trees and sycamore because those are high numbers too. We're seeing higher numbers than we've ever seen before," said Tanvi Pate, pollen program supervisor, UNLV.

What that means for allergy sufferers is even those with mild or no symptoms are probably feeling it. If you have asthma or severe allergies, your symptoms could be extreme right now.

Allergy experts suggest you take medications at night so it's in your system when you wake up, when pollen counts are peaking. Also try to wash your hair and clothes at night so you don't infect your pillow and bed with pollen and allergens.

And a warning, if we keep getting temperatures in the 80s and 90s with occasional rain, this could continue until June.
