Pools, heat pose summer dangers

LAS VEGAS - It's only the middle of the year and there's already been 26 reported incidents of rescuing someone who has fallen into the water. Five of those turned deadly.

As the temperatures head upward, some Las Vegas head to the pool to cool down.

"We take him to a friend's pool," said Jennifer Welborne. My dad stays with him or I stay with him."

While pools can be a lot of fun, they can also be very dangerous. Child safety advocates met with parents at Sunrise Hospital Friday to talk about swimming and heat dangers.

Brianna Rukavina's daughter died after she drowned when she was 11 months old.

"It happens quickly. I want parents to know how quickly it can happen," she said.

It was a warm day when her daughter wandered off to the backyard. Even though the pool was covered with a solar cover, her daughter fell in.

"It's not like the movies. They go under silently. There's no thrashinig. There's no crying for help," Rukavina said.

Drowning isn't the only danger. Scorching temperatures are expected to continue over the weekend, Doctor Harry Zilberman is asking parents to limit time outdoors for their children.

"It's extremely important for our children to be drinking water on a regular basis especially if they are engaging in sports or outside," he said.

Heat exhaustion can affect anyone and can happen quickly. It often starts with excessive sweating and stomach cramps.

"Eventually the body's coping mechanisms are overwhelmed and when the sweating stops and the body temperature rises very quickly, it can cause permanent brain damage," Dr. Zilberman said.

Welbourne says she is prepared for this weekend and the rest of the summer.

"I have an insulated pack that I pack a water bottle with ice and sippy cup with ice water."

She says she doesn't want to risk anything happening to those most important to her.
