Preparation can improve job fair chances

LAS VEGAS - Thousands of job seekers are expected at two unrelated job fairs taking place Wednesday. Experts say some simple steps can help job seekers stand out among the crowd of applicants.

Manpower, Inc. recommends researching the companies that are hiring and becoming familiar with their open positions. This can help applicants gauge the types of questions employers may ask.

Job seekers should rehearse potential questions with family or friends to better prepare for interviews.

Attire is also important. Applicants should wear business attire such as a suit or dress.

Applicants should also have updated resumes handy. Manpower recommends listing work history in chronological order and highlighting accomplishments.

Manpower, Inc. branch manager Brian Wolf says maintaining a positive attitude is equally important.

"You have to be respectful. I think it's important to find that positive spin on what you did at that employer that helped that employer grow. If you've just moved on within your career, your challenges, I think it's fine to be honest with that," he said.

If you speak with a company representative at a job fair, Wolf recommends documenting whom you spoke with and getting their contact information. He says it's also a good idea to follow up with them after the job fair.

Job fairs can be stressful. If you think you will need moral support, bring a family member of friend.
