Prosecution shows aerial view of Bundy standoff

LAS VEGAS - Jurors received a 2-mile overview of an armed standoff near Nevada cattleman Cliven Bundy's ranch in April 2014.  Monday was the first day of testimony in the trial for six defendants accused of wielding weapons against federal agents.

A special agent with the Bureau of Land Management who planned the cattle removal described the lead up to the armed standoff.  The special FBI agent was in charge of planning and security.

The prosecution laid out how this all began with the second witness, an attorney for the department of justice who went over two court orders , the first dating back to 1998 for Rancher Cliven Bundy to remove his cattle from public lands.

However, Bundy didn't cooperate and the federal government organized an impoundment, so Bundy led a fight against them resulting in the armed standoff.

An FBI agent told a U.S. District Court jury Monday that people on the ground probably didn't know he was shooting video from a small plane circling at nearly 12,000 feet above.

The images show people on foot and on horseback approach armed federal agents and Bureau of Land Management employees near cattle in corals in a dry river wash beneath an Interstate 15 overpass.

Defense attorneys are portraying the defendants as law-abiding citizens spurred by reports of scuffles between federal agents and Bundy family members to protest a government roundup of Bundy cattle.

If the six men are convicted, they could spend the rest of their lives in prison.  Bundy and his sons are part of a total of seventeen defendants, broken up into three trials.  Bundy and his sons are expected at the second trial.
