Prosecutors Want Medical Exam for Dr. Desai

LAS VEGAS -- Prosecutors in the hepatitis C case are want more information on the medical problems of the doctor at the center of the scandal.

They want an independent doctor to examine Dr. Depak Desai, the owner of the Endoscopy Centers of Southern Nevada, in order to determine his ability to assist in his defense.

Prosecutors also want Desai's medical records. Lawyers say recent strokes have left Desai mentally impaired. But prosecutors accuse Desai of "malingering" to delay the case and avoid punishment.

Desai and two others face felony charges and are accused of infecting people with hepatitis C through sloppy medical practices including reusing vials of medication.
