Quintuplets Moving to Las Vegas Hospital in Shifts

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A Las Vegas family and their newborn quintuplets traveled from an Arizona hospital to their hometown in shifts.

Two of the Derrico babies were flown to Summerlin Hospital Friday morning, while the remaining three babies arrived in two flights later in the day.

The 2-week-old babies are expected to stay at the Las Vegas hospital for several more weeks.

"They should lead very healthy, productive normal lives. They'll be with us as they grow up to be big enough until they can stay warm in a regular bed. Right now, they're too small for that, so they're in isolets." Dr. Martha Knutsen said.

The family moved to Arizona 22 weeks into Evonne Derrico's pregnancy to be closer to doctors specializing in multiple births. The babies were delivered by Caesarean section on Sept. 6, eight months into the pregnancy.

"To go from a situation where we thought we were having triplets, and now to five, we definitely have five newborn babies. It is like 'wow! What are we going to do?'" Deon Derrico the father of quintuplets said.

Derrico also says the babies were not conceived by artificial methods like in vitro fertilization.

The two boys and three girls all have names that start with the letter "D": Daneeko, Dariz, Deonee, Daician, and Daiten.

They join four other siblings, including a 7-year-old sister, a 3-year-old brother and 1-year-old twin brothers.
