Report: Las Vegas is top spot in U.S. to steal motorcycles

LAS VEGAS - Motorcycles: They're just not popular with riders; they're also popular among thieves.  New numbers released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed that Las Vegas was one of the top hot spots in the country to steal a motorcycle.

Nevada as a state ranks tenth for motorcycle thefts, but in 2016 the City of Las Vegas was third for most motorcycle thefts with 818 bikes stolen.

The cities ahead of Las Vegas consist of New York City and San Diego.

Scott Hughes of Moto Zone says he sees a lot of insurance claims and tends to fix a lot of bikes damaged when stolen.
According to Hughes, most of the time, thieves don't have to start the engine to take the bike.  According to Hughes, stealing a motorcycle, especially a lighter weight model is easier than many think.

"If somebody wants something bad enough, they're going to get it, and all you can do is slow the theft down a little bit with chains, extra locks, disc locks, security systems," Hughes said.
"But the bottom line is that if you have three or four people, you can lift one up, throw it in the back of a truck and off you go in a matter of minutes."

However, Hughes says there are things motorcycle owners can do to protect their bikes.

  • Invest in a security system: Some security systems have proximity sensors that notify owners when someone has tampered with their bike.
  • Intercept ignitions with hidden toggle switches.
  • Invest in a tracking system like LoJack:  These particular systems make it more difficult to pick up and steal.
  • If you're going to park your motorcycle outside, try to leave it in front of a car or in front of parking bump stops where it would be harder to pick up and remove.
  • Pick a heavier bike: Cruisers are harder to steal because they weigh 600 to 800 pounds or more. Sports bikes are popular among thieves.
