Report: Man accused of deadly crash smoked marijuana that day

LAS VEGAS - The man who police say caused a crash last week that left three pedestrians dead and involved 12 cars told police he smoked marijuana that day, according to his arrest report.

Daniel Becker, 31, had also surrendered his drivers license in September 2017 following an accident. His license was surrendered due to his seizure disorder, the report said.

Three pedestrians, Carrie Smith, 49, Jazzy Smith 19, and Charlene Emerson, 69, died at the scene of the crash and six people were transported for injuries including a woman who suffered head injuries.

The woman was critically injured when a body part from one of the pedestrians came through her car window and struck her in the head.

Following the crash, Becker, who was also transported to the hospital, told officers that he smoked marijuana every morning, including that day prior to going to work. The crash happened around 3 p.m. at Eastern Avenue and Flamingo Road.

According to the arrest report, officers did conduct some tests on Becker and concluded the psychoactive indicators were consistent with a person under the influence of cannabis. His blood samples are still pending. He did pass a breath test showing there was no alcohol in his system.

Based on his admitting to smoking marijuana and his test results, the report said, Becker was charged with Driving under the Influence of Drugs causing Substantial Bodily Harm, DUI resulting in death and reckless driving.
