Report: Man arrested in tourist's killing planned to turn himself in to police

LAS VEGAS - The man accused of punching and killing a tourist in downtown Las Vegas told police he had planned to turn himself in to authorities, according to his arrest report.

James Beach, 27, is facing a murder charge in the 1-punch death of 45-year-old Luis Campos who died a few days after the April 30 incident. He made his first court appearance on Wednesday morning. About 12 of his relatives and friends showed up in court to support him.

Campos was in line with his brothers outside of a downtown nightclub when he was punched.

According to the arrest report, Beach approached Campos and asked, "Is there a problem? Why are you mad dogging me?" There was an exchange of words and Beach punched Campos causing him to lose consciousness and fall to the sidewalk. Beach and a friend then fled east on Fremont Street. The report did indicate that Beach's friend, Javier Gaona, appeared to try and hold him back during the confrontation.

Campos, the father of five, died on May 4.

Beach told police, when he heard of the death, he contacted his attorney and was planning to turn himself in to authorities. His attorney, Greg Knapp, calls the incident a terrible accident and unfortunate event.

Beach was arrested on May 7 after numerous people identified him from a surveillance video that police released to the media.

Gaona told police that Beach was extremely intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Beach is an ex-felon who served more than four years in Nevada state prison for his conviction in a Nov. 2008 shooting.

Beach's bail hearing is set for Friday.
