Report: UNLV Stadium Could Bring $394M in Growth

LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas bills itself as the entertainment capital of the world, but a new study finds it is losing millions of dollars every year because southern Nevada doesn't have a huge stadium.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas hopes to fill that void by building a stadium on the western edge of the campus.

If this stadium is built, it would be a game changer, according to the study.

A 60,000 seat, all-weather, covered mega-events stadium at UNLV is part of the campus' brand new master plan.

"This really gives us a place to feel like we are on the same playing field as other universities," UNLV student Sara Geary said.

Nevada's Board of Regents also learned this multi-million dollar UNLVNow project, paid for through a private-public partnership, could be a win-win for Las Vegas.

"It's adding what I refer to as the missing link to our community, our tourism community," said Don Snyder, dean of the UNLV hotel college.

Mark Rosentraub, of the University of Michigan's Center for Sport Management, looked into the economic impact of a brand new stadium at UNLV.

"If this facility were to be built, what would be the economic return to the community? Would it be worth it or not?" he said.

According to his figures, it would be worth it.

A stadium could bring 15 new major events, from professional sports to concerts, with a $394 million annual economic impact.

Of that, $66 million would benefit UNLV.
