Ripple Effect at McCarran After SFO Plane Crash

LAS VEGAS -- Thousands of passengers are now experiencing long delays due to the temporary airport closures in San Francisco.

On Saturday, numerous flights were cancelled at McCarran International Airport. Airport officials are urging everyone scheduled to board a flight to keep an eye on their flight schedule, even if they are not traveling to San Francisco.

Gaping holes and plumes of smoke could be seen coming from an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777, moments after it made impact near a runway at the San Francisco international airport. The accident caused the San Francisco International Airport runways to close, triggering a domino effect being felt by passengers all around the country.

David Winer was on a flight from New York, bound for San Francisco when he said social media began buzzing about the crash.

"I noticed that our flight started turning south," said Winer. Winer ended up at McCarran with hundreds of other stranded passengers.

Passengers coming from other parts of California said they were shocked when they finally saw the images of the plane crash.

"It's frightening and my prayers are with them for sure," said Kitty Kiser.

"When we were able to turn our phones back on, I checked my Facebook and I noticed someone had commented on a post of mine…saying ‘I'm glad you didn't fly out of San Francisco' and that's how I found out about it," said Andrea Murphy.

With dozens of flights either canceled or diverted, delays are being felt even for passengers traveling to other parts of the country. A spokesperson for McCarran said everyone traveling should keep a close eye on their flight schedules.

Winer said, after scrambling to find a new flight, he was able to board one and finally arrive at his destination.
