Rylie Golgart wants to be known as a survivor not a victim

LAS VEGAS - Rylie Golgart wants to be known as a survivor not a victim.

"Its been painful. Its been humbling. Its been emotional. Seeing her take her first step is the greatest thing I've ever seen in my life and then seeing her stumble, is the worst thing I've ever seen in my life," said Richard Janise, Golgart's stepfather.

The road to recovery will be a long one for Golgart, she was shot in the back at the Route 91 Harvest festival.

Golgart underwent emergency surgery and is now at a spine institute in Colorado.

"It's probably been the hardest thing that we've ever gone through in our lives but Golgart is the strength of us all," said Christina Sapone, Golgart's Aunt.

The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund helped to organize Friday night's benefit. Golgart is the daughter of longtime Metro detective Richard Golgart and the step daughter of Richard Janise, a Clark County firefighter.

"She's basically unstoppable and this event has shown her that she's unstoppable," said Janise

Golgart, a former high school soccer player, is 18 years old.

"I think this has just kind of like rocked us but her fight and her drive keeps us going," said Sapone.

She is one of the youngest victims of the 1 October shooting.

"We really took this to heart. This was something that we felt that we needed to at least attempt to make a difference in this family's life and I believe tonight we're going to do that," said Joe Geeb, Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund.
