LAS VEGAS -- Nevada is slated to lose $9 million for education when the federal spending cuts take effect on March 1. As many as 100 teachers and aides will be impacted, according to the Clark County School District.

Monday, which is Education Awareness day, was also the day Clark County educators held a rally to send a clear message to lawmakers that more funding and resources are needed.

One area of concern is the English Language Learner program. At Fay Herron Elementary School, 95 percent of students come from homes where English is not the primary language. Teachers say they've had to deal with deep cuts to the program and it's impacting how children learn.

"Teachers are spending lots of their money to find resources," said teacher Cassandra Bell.

In Clark County, more than 50,000 children rely on the ELL program because they are not proficient in English.

Over the past five years, school district budgets across Nevada have been cut by more than $800 million. The looming federal cuts could result in more challenges for teachers.

"If you don't have the resources like text or programs or computers, it's a big challenge," fourth grade teacher Sandra Obiedo said.

Also at issue, is overcrowding.

"We have way too many kids in the class," said Vikki Courtney, Clark County Education Association.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, in his State of the State address, pledged to do more to help Nevada schools, including $14 million for ELL programs.

Monday morning, Nevada Democrats announced they want to spend more than $300 million on education over the next two years, but they also say, they don't know where to find the money.
