Security guard fires gun at credit union robbery suspect

LAS VEGAS - A security guard at a credit union in southwest Las Vegas fired his gun at a suspect during an attempted robbery.

The security guard told police he shot the suspect twice, possibly striking him both times. The suspect was gone when police arrived at the scene. It's believed he drove away in a dark-colored Jaguar.

The incident happened at American First Credit Union around 11 a.m. in the 6000 block of S. Durango Drive near Patrick Lane.

According to police, the suspect was a white male in his 30's wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and possibly a mask.

The shooting took place outside the business inside a vestibule area. Police said the employees noticed the suspect was coming in so they attempted to lock the front doors and notified the security guard. The guard was able to stop the man before he could get into the bank.

Police did received a tip that a man with a gunshot wound showed up at a local hospital for treatment. Investigators have not confirmed if he is the suspect.

Police are still putting together all the witness statements.

"We're still working to confirm all, everything with video surveillance, of course, comparing what the security guard states, with other people who were in the immediate area so to say that the security guard did what was right, I can't say that exactly yet," said Michael Rodriguez, Metro Police.

Police say there were customers inside the credit union at the time of the attempted robbery, but no one else was injured.

The credit union is located in a busy shopping center.

The investigation affected many businesses and customers.

"I just live right over here and I was passing by," said Tony Delgado.  "I needed to make a stop here at the insurance place and I saw police and a lot of commotion.  When you see a lot of yellow tape like this, they don't want you in there. That means it's pretty serious."

The credit union remained closed for the rest of the day, but it was business as usual for the rest of the businesses in the plaza.
