LAS VEGAS -- Inside the packed courtroom inside the Clark County Regional Justice Center, Roquel Love said she could not believe the year she has had since her daughter, Faith, was killed.
Love said the full sentence doesn't change the fact her daughter is gone forever. She said she isn't focused on the man who put them in this situation.
"I wasn't even paying attention to him," Love said. "He's never been my focus."
A Clark County judge handed down the maximum sentence to an intoxicated driver after he hit and killed a 12-year-old girl as she was trick-or-treating in 2011.
Justin Caramanica, 42, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and $2,000 in fines.
Faith Love was trick-or-treating when she crossed the street. She was hit so hard by the speeding car, the bumper fell off.
In front of Faith's friends and family, Caramanica asked for forgiveness and said he cannot forget what happened that Halloween night.
"Every day that goes by, I think about it," he said. "I think about my actions. I'm haunted at night by nightmares."
Standing in front of the court, Love said she was not thinking of Caramanica, but instead remembering the 12-year-old girl who wanted to be a marine biologist. She never got to pick a college or a experience a first kiss, her mother said.
"What does a mother's heart do with that?" Love said. "I am forever changed because of this irresponsible, irresponsible stranger that found us."
Watching a video of Faith's life in the courtroom, Caramanica cried.
He said he has two young daughters of his own -- one the same age as faith and is leaving not just one, but two families destroyed.
Love said she is satisfied with the sentence, but it offers little solace to in her grief.
"They're fragments here that have to be put back together," she said. "And that's just my heart. My soul -- that's a whole other issue."
The judge said Caramanica received the maximum sentence in part because he violated parole in September when he drove under the influence and crashed into a parked car.
He is eligible for parole in eight years.
