Sex education meeting brings heated debate

LAS VEGAS - Tensions rose during a Clark County School District meeting on sex education Tuesday night. The meeting lasted several hours.

At issue is whether sex education in schools requires parental consent. Most of the people who attended the meeting wanted the option.

“Nobody is a better advocate for my kid than me,” said one parent.

“There was a comment made earlier today that we should keep values and morality out of the school system. That’s a lie,” parent Brent Quist said.

Before the meeting, a group of approximately 30 people marched outside the Las Vegas Academy and held a sex education lesson.

“I learned if I had sex, I wasn’t pure. I learned inaccurate facts from my peers. I was never told. I was never told that these myths weren’t true,” said 18-year-old Caitlyn Caruso, a recent graduate from Nevada Learning Academy.

She says she graduated last year and started attending UNLV. She is passionate about sex education, and she shared her personal story with the crowd.

She was met with some boos. Others called for her to be kicked out after the language she used.

“I was raped at age 13, and I know that people think education won’t solve it, but the person that raped me did not know that giving me more than five drinks in an hour and then (expletive) me in a bed was inappropriate,” she said. “I am asking that this board see my story and realize that our students are not receiving the language they need and the education they need to feel okay and alright with themselves.”

One trustee made an emotional plea to the crowd to be respectful of each other.

At one point, the crowd was urged to use their hands to show support rather than yell or cheer.
