Sheriff Calls Deadly Shooting, Crash 'Totally Unacceptable'

LAS VEGAS -- Sheriff Doug Gillespie said the Las Vegas Strip is safe despite the early morning shooting and crash that killed three people near Flamingo Road.

The sheriff, who spoke with the media shortly after 2 p.m., called the shooting "totally unacceptable" and that the Metro Police force will be making "a very clear message to these individuals in regards to that."

He said the shooting was spurred by a verbal disagreement at the valet area at CityCenter's Aria.

"Actions of those today do not reflect values" of Las Vegans, he said. "(It) will not be tolerated, (the shooters) will be found and they will be prosecuted to full extent of the law."

The gunman or gunmen were in a Range Rover when they opened fire on a Maserati, killing the driver and injuring the passenger. The Maserati then drove at a high rate of speed through the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road, hitting a taxi cab, which then exploded and killed its driver and passenger.

Gillespie reiterated that the gunman or gunmen are considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Local police should be informed immediately.

Gillespie said his department is working with other local law enforcement agencies and those in Utah, California and Arizona.

The Las Vegas Strip at Flamingo Road continues to be closed as detectives investigate.
