Small town of Nipton, Calif. may be sold, turned into pot oasis

NIPTON, Calif. - There isn't much that happens in Nipton, California.  The homes are small and mostly mobile.  In fact, the school house has been empty for years. But right now, the small desert community near Primm is on the verge of being bought by the marijuana industry.

"Everything's legal until you get caught," Jim Eslinger of the Nipton Trading Post said as he laughed.

Eslinger has lived in Nipton for eight years, longer than anyone else in the town.

"I hear it might be getting bought, and I hear that I might be sold," said Eslinger.

Thursday, a marijuana company called American Green announced that it had purchased the town.  American Green plans to turn the desolate town into a modern, energy-independent, pot-friendly destination.

Marijuana would be grown, sold and used while other attractions are added.  However, a representative for Nipton's owner says the deal isn't quite done.

"If it is sold, I hope they keep me here," Eslinger said.

Even with his upbeat personality, Eslinger says he's a bit paranoid about the deal because he doesn't want to lose his town.

"I found my happy place in the world," said Eslinger.

Eslinger says he wants to die in Nipton, but in to ensure that he doesn't have to leave, he will have to talk to the town's new potential owners.

"Hopefully, I make a good impression.  I figure if they're putting in big manufacturing, I will make a great poster child," Eslinger said.

American Green did not return requests for comment Friday.
Recreational marijuana is legal in California.
