Southern Nevada Health District lays off 11 employees

LAS VEGAS -- The Southern Nevada Health District laid off 11 employees on Friday.

The layoffs were from security, information technology and janitorial positions. The health district says the laid off employees can apply for open positions in the agency.

The district is cutting jobs because of budget concerns.

"For the past several years, we've been operating under a deficit, and this past year we had a deficit of around $7.5 million, and had similar deficits so what we've done is create a plan, so that we are operating at a zero balance in the course of the next couple of years." director of administration Andrew Glass said.

More layoffs are expected at the end of the week. There is no word on the total number of people that will be laid off, or which departments will see cuts.

The district does say the layoffs will not impact health services.
