LAS VEGAS -- A controversial radio and TV ad asking Latinos not to vote in the upcoming mid-term election will not be hitting the airwaves anytime soon.
The Spanish ad was set to be on radio Tuesday, and then eventually on TV. But the local Univision radio station will not be airing the ads at all.
Univision corporate said the radio or TV ads will not air on any Univision stations.
"I think that's a great move from the corporation. They make their own decision in terms of what they are doing, but as a member of the community, I applaud them for actually stepping in and saying, 'We are no longer take these political advertisement that hinder the community,'" said Artie Blanco with the Hispanic Institute.
Blanco's Hispanic Institute is a non-partisan group that worked to register more than 10,000 voters, many of whom are Latinos. After hearing the ad that was made for radio and TV, she was frustrated and questioned why someone or some group would come up with such an idea.
Robert De Posada with Latinos for Reform is with the group that produced the ad and shared why they put it together.
"That's the problem: we have two very poor candidates that have acted irresponsibly against our community and we can't not reward anyone of the two," he said.
The ads were set to start running in Nevada, and then California and eventually Florida.
De Posada says Univision had a script on Friday and the ad aired five times this morning on the local radio station. He feels it was pulled because of political threats to Univision.
In a statement, the company says, "Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting. It is also important to clarify that while Mr. Robert de Posada has on occasion provided political commentary on Univision, representing one of various points of views, he is not in any way affiliated with Univision. Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote."
