State Education Chief Interviews Under Way

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Interviews are under way for four semifinalists being considered for Nevada superintendent of public instruction.

The state Board of Education is interviewing the contenders in an open meeting Thursday. The board will then recommend three names to Gov. Brian Sandoval, who will make the final appointment.

Candidates include interim Superintendent Rorie Fitzpatrick and former Sandoval adviser Dale Erquiaga.

Rene Cantu Jr., executive director of the Latin Chamber of Commerce's Community Foundation, is also in the running, as is Michael Sentance, former secretary of education in Massachusetts.

The next superintendent will replace James Guthrie, who abruptly resigned in March after a year on the job.
