Student, 12, arrested for Thurman White school stabbing

LAS VEGAS - A 12-year-old girl is in Clark County juvenile detention accused of stabbing another teenager at school Friday.

It happened in the morning as students were preparing to wrap up their first week of classes inside Henderson's Thurman White Middle School near Galleria Drive and Patrick Lane.

Many of them heard the commotion, even if they didn't see the stabbing itself. Just before first period, as students waited in the quad, police say an off-campus dispute made its way to school.

From the sidewalk outside White Middle School, it's hard to envision what happened inside. Unfortunately, 6th grader Eber Hernandez can. He was there.

"We were walking to first period," he said. "We were waiting to enter and there was screaming by the cafeteria lunch room."

At 8:30 a.m. there was a fight in the quad.

"One girl, they were just pulling hair. One girl pulled out a knife and that's when kids starting running to their classes," Hernandez said.

Clark County School District Police confirms there was a fight between two girls. Witnesses say one was stabbed in the back.

"The person that did the stabbing is 12 years old. Our victim is 16 years old," said Captain Ken Young, CCSD Police.

Police say the 16-year-old went to White, even though she doesn't go to the school there, and what may have been a fight that started over the summer, extended to the campus Friday morning.

The 16-year-old got on campus and was stabbed by the 12-year-old who is a Thurman White student.

"It's the first week of school. So, that student was able to blend in with the other students," said Captain Young.

While school staff reviews its own security measures, students had to see the reality of violence first hand.

"There was blood all over the floor," Hernandez said. "There was a bunch of blood everywhere, by the cafeteria."

Some parents chose to take their children out of school, though staff tried to keep class as normal as possible. Hernandez's grandmother came to take him home.

"It just sounded like something that would never happen," Hernandez said.

According to CCSD Police, the suspect has been booked into county juvenile detention on a battery charge.
The victim is in the hospital, but her injuries are not life-threatening.
