Students take part in bullying, violence conference

More than one out of every five students report being bullied, according to the National Bullying Prevention Center.

Clark County is taking notice and searching for more ways to stop bullying.

Bullying and youth violence seem to be a common occurrences in schools across the United States. With the help of some young minds in Nevada, there might be solutions to these problems.

Physical, cyber, and emotional bullying are some of the many issues students have to deal with on a daily basis.

Twenty-five students from Swainston Middle School were chosen, based on essays they wrote about bullying and youth violence, to try and tackle the issue.

Some of the students who wrote these papers have not experienced bullying, but have witnessed it.

"When there's a fight, people run to the fight and they take pictures and take videos and they post them on the Internet and everything. And I'm just like OK, but where's the help coming from? That's not something I would do. That's not how I was raised," said Destiny Talbert, 8th grader .

Participants were also able to talk to other students in northern Nevada through video chat and exchange ideas on how to curb these issues.

Many of the suggestions included questioning someone who is participating in bullying, showing the victim comfort, and creating clubs where people can be themselves.

The ultimate goal of this summit is to empower young people and make a difference.

"It's important for me to do that now so this is really an honor and I hope that if we save just one, our jobs have been done," said Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly.

On May 2, 500 from this program and one teacher will make their way to Carson City to meet legislators and tour the state's capital.
