Superbug increase resistant to antibiotics

LAS VEGAS - The World Health Organization said it considered Superbugs to be one of the biggest threats to global health.  Especially, after a new report that surfaced showed a Reno woman who died last September, actually died from a strain resistant to 26 different antibiotics.

The case involved an elderly woman who had recently returned from India.  The information sent a wake-up call to those in the healthcare field.

Superbugs are bacteria that no known antibiotic can destroy, and there's no boundary keeping them back.
It's hard to imagine a danger so great and so looming could be so naked to the human eye, but it is, and Superbugs are here in the United States, and they're a threat no matter who you are or where you are.

"I'm not surprised at all that this happens, Dr. Joseph Adeshak said.

Adeshak is a clinical associate professor at the University of Nevada's school of medicine.  He says he remembers when there was panic over the first discovered Superbug.

But in 2013, the Centers for Disease Control identified 18 different types of Superbugs.

"The case in Reno doesn't make me start to panic any more than I already do," Dr. Adeshak said.

Superbugs can be highly contagious, but Dr. Adahsek believes the over prescription of antibiotics is a leading cause of the rise of Superbugs.

"The number 2 problem is people don't finish their antibiotics, so the strong bacteria survives, the weak ones get killed, and now you have a much stronger bacteria that are now resistant to that antibiotic because people didn't take the full course," said Adeshak.

Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin in 1925.  However, when he accepted the Nobel Prize he warned bacteria could grow resistant to what some considered to be a "miracle drug."

"This is going to happen more and more as the years progress, as fewer antibiotics are being produced, and more bacteria are now resistant to more and more different types of antibiotics," Dr. Adeshak said.
