LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police say a violent sexual predator and killer is in jail. Police believe his arrest solves three violent crimes: the double murder of the Martinez family and a separate rape case.
Only 8 News NOW has the exclusive photo of 22-year-old Bryan Clay in the back of a Metro cruiser headed to jail. He was arrested at 6:30 Friday morning on a child abuse charge. Saturday, Clay will be charged with sexual assault for raping a 50-year-old woman as she was walking home April 15.
He will be charged with two counts of murder and sexual assault for one of the worst crimes veteran police in this city say they have ever seen. Metro says on April 16, Clay broke into the home of Yadira and Arturo Martinez near Rancho Drive and Washington Avenue. The attack was random.
Clay allegedly went on a rampage with a claw hammer. The details of what happened are graphic, but before the horror was over, 38-year-old Yadira Martinez and her daughter 10-year-old daughter Karla Martinez were dead.
Arturo Martinez fought to save his family and nearly died himself. He's still hospitalized. The attack left him unable to speak. The lives of the family's two boys, ages 4 and 9, were spared.
Metro worked around the clock to find the cold-blooded killer in this case. Late Friday night, police spoke about the two tragedies this arrest solves.
"Remember what we're talking about. We're talking about a 50-year-old woman who was attacked, brutally attacked, and she was sexually assaulted," Metro Police Lt. Ray Steiber said. "We're talking about a family who was in their home and, unbeknownst to them, a savage intruder enters that home and attacks three people - killing two and then sexually assaulting them. We have a family out there that has to live with this."
The man who raped the 50-year-old woman near Vegas Drive and Tonopah Drive left behind a Cleveland Indians ball cap. It was a key piece of evidence in a complex investigation.
DNA testing pointing to Clay didn't come back from the lab until 5 p.m. Friday. The next development comes at 7 a.m. Saturday when murder and sexual assault charges will be filed in these two tragic cases.
