Suspect arrested in UNLV kidnapping, sex assault case

LAS VEGAS - A 21-year-old man is facing several charges following his arrest in connection with the kidnapping and sexual assault of a UNLV student.

"It kind of takes the weight off your shoulders to know that the campus might be a bit safer," said UNLV student Bianca Castillo.

Metro Police took Juhjuan Washington into custody Sunday, Oct. 22 at a residence near the intersection of E. Robindale Road and S. Eastern Avenue.

"It doesn't really make me feel safer because anyone can do that to anybody, so, it's like this one guy is gone but there is still multiple people that can do this same thing," said Ashley Alacios, UNLV student.

According to UNLV Police, a female student was attacked while getting out of her car in a parking garage at Cambridge Street and Katie Avenue on Oct. 20 around 6:30 a.m. The suspect, armed with a gun, forced the woman back into her car and sexually assaulted her.

The woman was able to get the suspect's firearm and get away from him, police said.

Investigators say Washington matches the description of a suspect in other incidents earlier in the month.

Washington is facing the following charges:

  • Two counts of kidnapping with a deadly weapon (2 counts)
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Coercion with force or threat of force
  • Robbery with the use of a deadly weapon
  • Burglary while in possession of a gun
  • Grand larceny auto
  • Possession of a stolen vehicle
  • Open and gross lewdness (6 counts)
  • Attempt to destroy/conceal evidence

Police say Washington could have additional victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact LVMPD Sexual Assault Section at (702) 828-3421. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (702)385-5555.
