Teen born with half a heart continues to defy odds

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas teenager is showing all of us what it means to beat the odds. Eighteen-year-old Zachary Mackenzie was born with "half his heart," a rare medical condition that made his parents believe he would never see his 18th birthday.

"It's amazing. It's unreal still," Zach, as he's known to family and friends, said.

He looks like any other teen getting ready for a new chapter in his life. But his path getting here is much different than most kids his age.

"They don't believe me," he said. "I actually have to show them my scar for them to believe."

The scars from three different open heart surgeries -- all before he was 3 years old.

"They told me there was no hope for Zach," his mother, Tracey Moran says. For years, doctors told him he may not live past five, then 10, then 18 -- but Zach never gave up and his family never gave up on him.

"He has been a fighter his entire life. I'm sure it has helped us fight."

Zach remains equally optimistic. "The only thing I always think of is everything happens for a reason so why question it."
