Three Children Injured in Auto-Pedestrian Accident

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- North Las Vegas police are investigating an auto-pedestrian accident on Camino Eldorado and Tropical Parkway. Police say a car struck three children - two 6-year-old girls and one 5-year-old girl - as they crossed the street in a marked crosswalk.

The accident happened around 6:45 p.m. Friday evening.

As of Friday night, two of the girls were in extremely critical condition. One was in serious condition.

The kids were crossing the street with two 13-year-old girls. All five children were crossing Camino Eldorado in a marked crosswalk. The teens did not suffer any injuries.

Police say one car stopped in the inside lane to allow the pedestrians to pass.

In the outside, right lane, a 78-year-old woman in her sedan drove by the stopped car and hit the younger children. The car continued traveling with two of the children still on it. It stopped approximately 50 yards later.

North Las Vegas Sgt. Tim Bedwell says many of these serious, life-threatening pedestrian accidents in crosswalks happen when one car is stopped in one lane and another car goes flying by in the next lane

"Drivers need to realize that if there is a car stopped in the roadway, 99 percent of the time there's a valid reason for that. There is something that they need to stop for, and if there's a crosswalk and there's a car stopped, that car is probably stopped for a pedestrian, and you are absolutely required to stop as well," he said.

The children were rushed to University Medical Center.

The 78-year-old driver was in the North Las Vegas Detention Center for a voluntarily blood draw. Police say, at this point, there's no indication alcohol is a factor.
