This week's Wednesday's Child is Brandon. And like many of the kids we feature, his story is one of survival and hope.
Dave was at Sunset Park on a beautiful spring afternoon with Brandon and Zachery. They're not related, but at one time they shared a foster home. Dave is going to focus on Brandon this week and Zachery next week. But they both need adoptive homes.
Brandon is almost 11 years old. He's a handsome boy with very good manners and a common-sense attitude. When Dave asked him about his situation, he said he was mad and sad.
"I feel sad because I'm not with my real mom and dad, and mad 'cause I have to get adopted," said Brandon.
Brandon may not understand why he can't be with his natural parents, but he clearly wants to maintain communication with his siblings -- something his adoptive parents will have to support.
"We're trying to figure out what the situation is going to be like. Is it going to be him going into a home by himself and keeping in contact with his siblings, or are they all going to be in one home together? And so even that sort of uncertainty kind of falls back onto him, in his lap. And so he kind of carries that around as well," explained Andre, a recruitment specialist with Clark County's Department of Family Services.
Brandon clearly misses having a real family, and all that goes with it.
"I would like to do, like, uh, like stay with a family who I could love, and handle me, um because, like, I wanna do like family time, and uh, and I would like to do everything with the family and my brothers and sisters," admitted Brandon.
Brandon needs the things most kids his age need to thrive -- structure, support, love.
"I think structure is good for him, and knowing his boundaries, just like with any kid. Just gonna need some life skills training, just as any other 10-year-old would need, and someone that is going to provide some love for him and support," said Andre.
