Trash-Filled Lot an Eyesore to Nearby Residents

LAS VEGAS - Chuck Wood takes his dog Skittles on a walk every single day. Skittles can't walk on his own, since he just had surgery.

Normally, the walks are picturesque - with birds chirping and plenty of sidewalks – until Wood and Skittles reach an abandoned lot near Flamingo and Cimarron. Trash lines the fence inside and out.

"This looks like the Las Vegas landfill over here," Wood said. "There's paper, a car hood, a broken box stereo."

Wood thought someone should clean it up, so he does his part. "It is just unsightly," he said. "We pick up stuff, you know."

He can't, however, do it alone. So, he called the phone number on a faded, tagged sign on the fence which directed him to the Clark County School District.

"They were very nice and about two weeks later, they called me and said it doesn't belong to them," Wood said.

He called the City of Las Vegas, but city officials told him the lot belongs to the Bureau of Land Management. When he called BLM, he says they told him it wasn't their responsibility to clean up the lot either.

He turned to 8 on Your Side. The 8 on Your Side team sent pictures of the trash to the Clark County School District which, despite what school representatives told Wood, owns the lot. CCSD agreed to send someone out to clean it up. In addition to cleaning up the lot, crews also removed remaining trash on the road.

By the time Skittles is up and running again, he'll be able to walk on a nice, clean path.
