Two-alarm fire damages school, classes canceled for Thursday

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County Fire Department says a two-alarm fire caused by solar panels damaged Faith Lutheran Middle School. All the students were evacuated before fire crews got there.

The fire was reported just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. When firefighters arrived, they searched the school for any students that might still be inside and to see if the fire had moved into the interior of the school. They then went to the roof where two of the school's solar panels had started on fire. The department got the fire under control less than a half hour, once they were able to get water to the roof.

Three classrooms suffered water damage. The school announced that it will be closed Thursday for repairs. According to a email sent to parents, the air conditioning is not working in the main building, the fire alarm system cannot be reset and there is still the smell of smoke.

Students that were supposed to take an advanced placement test Thursday are being told to go to the amphitheater at 8 a.m., from there they will be directed to the available space that will be used for the exam.

The fire department is working with solar technicians to determine the cause of the fire
