Uncertainty of DACA program puts future of Dreamers in danger

LAS VEGAS - The uncertainty of the DACA program has put the future of more than 13,000 Dreamers in Nevada in jeopardy.

Right now, the DACA program has bi-partisan support, but both sides of the aisle are against a government shutdown.  But at the center of it all is an estimated 800,000 Dreamers, and thousands of them live in Las Vegas.

President Donald Trump has given Congress until March 5 to pass legislation before DACA completely goes away.

As dreamers wait for lawmakers to take action, many are losing their deportation protection because as the program is phased out, many young immigrants were not able to renew their work permits.

Meanwhile, for others, the uncertain future of the Obama-era policy has left them in limbo.

Dreamer Ana Nava says she's trying to stay positive.

"Hopefully something good happens, and if not, well, I mean; I'm just preparing myself, but I mean, hopefully, Congress makes a decision because it's not a game, you know," Nava said. "Like what's going on like they're playing with our dreams."

As of Sept. 30, there were 13,100, and 60 Dreamers protected under the program.  Those numbers are the latest figures released by the by the U.S. citizenship and immigration services.

This is the same month the federal government stopped receiving new applications for DACA.

Current recipients were able to renew their work permits as long as they filed all paperwork by October.
