UPDATE: Coroner identifies 3-year-old who died after being left in a car

LAS VEGAS - A family celebration turned tragic on Saturday when a toddler died after being left in a hot car at the Grandview Las Vegas Resort.

Police arrived at the scene around 4:50 p.m. They found the 3-year-old child in a car seat and the windows rolled up, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigators.

The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the child as Chase Lee of Fillmore Utah.

"The cop had gone over to where the child was laying on the ground, on a towel in distress. The parents were there, the grandmother was there. Someone was making efforts to revive the child and then the policeman stepped in to do CPR," said John McDavid, witness.

Officers quickly determined the child was suffering from heat-related injuries.  Medical responders rushed the child to the hospital where the child died, police said.

Investigators say the child was part of a large family which was visiting from out of town. They believe the family got caught up in the festivities and lost track of the child.

"We were shocked and it's always a bad scene to come up upon a situation like that. So, my heart goes out to the family," McDavid said.

The child is thought to have been in the car for at least an hour. The parents are not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the time of the incident, according to police.

There is no word if the parents will face charges at this point. The investigation is ongoing.
