UPDATE: Police say teen accidentally shot and killed grandmother

LAS VEGAS - A grandmother is dead after her 19-year-old grandson shot her, according to police.

The shooting happened Thursday around 9:10 a.m. in the 6800 block of Fallona Avenue near Hollywood and E. Lake Mead boulevards.

The woman in her 60's was in bed when the gun fired from a separate room and struck her, according to investigators.

Homicide detectives believe the shooting was an accident caused by carelessness, said Sgt. Matthew Sanford, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Medical responders rushed the grandmother to UMC Trauma where she died. The 19-year-old is cooperating with investigators, police said.

Once the investigation is complete, police will hand the case over to the Clark County District Attorney's Office which will determine if the teen will face charges.
